A Boy and His Cat (You & Me)

A Boy and His Cat Layout by Carrie Williams - Dearzae.com - Mixed Media scrapbook page in antique gold and soft blue with pops of red - With Blue Fern Studios chipboard heat embossed with antique gold embossing powder, handmade flowers available at dearzae.etsy.com, wild orchid flowers

By now it's clear that I'm addicted to solving case files. Maybe it's because I always secretly wanted to be an FBI agent (or CIA, I'm not that picky). Maybe it's just because they are a fun way to create a layout. Whatever the reason, I wouldn't miss one if I had to scrap in my sleep. This month's major case file has some amazing colors I couldn't wait to work with. Especially since I had just made some flowers that were the perfect color to get started.

Here's a complete list of the challenges I entered this layout:

CSI Major Case File #225

Another Freaking Scrappy Challenge Use chipboard and something old from your stash

Colorful Creations Use ink and the a teal/red color scheme.

Lasting Memories Use lots of numbers

Scrap Our Stash Tic-Tac-Toe: Charm, Gold, Crate Paper

If you caught my last post, I was calling this layout You & Me (for obvious reasons), but I've decided since to call it A Boy and His Cat. So for confusion sake, I'll just refer to it as both so no one knows what I'm talking about. Sound good? Great, then let me introduce you to my latest layout: You & That Boy's Cat...or something or other.

Here's the case file we had to work with (you have until March 31st to get in on the fun--plus the chance to win some amazing prizes).

CSI Major Case File 225The evidence I used were stitching, triangles, animals, things that fly, and wings. I stitched triangles onto the journaling to add some interest.

I was inspired by two different prompts from Daydreaming on Paper...one was "What gives you the warm fuzzies?" The other was "How do you know when someone is your friend?"

I get the warm fuzzies seeing Zae interact with the "nices" around the house. Months ago, he spit out "nice kitty" (nahsss kee). This was before he even said single words (besides mama, dada, and nana). Well, he soon dropped the kitty part, so now cats (and now animals in general) are all just nice. I find it very amusing! It was pretty much all he said for several months.

The notebook print paper I used for the journaling is from the same collection. As a sometime writer, I have always loved typewriters anyway, and I thought it was a perfect little clue that there is something written there.

That's layered with this pretty Blue Fern Studios "Blossom Branch" chipboard. I heat embossed it with antique gold and added a little seafoam to the leaves. The seafoam worked perfectly, matching the papers like it was made for it, with flecks of both green and blue.

I used my Versamarker to hand draw in some branches beneath my chipboard, and added some prills for a little more texture.

I used Prima's Finnabair Mica Flakes to add a little more shine...and because I thought they looked like little leaves blowing on the wind. I sprinkled in a few of the red mica fragments from Stampendous to balance out the red.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered them, and even when I opened them the first time, but after using them for the first time on this layout, I loved the results.

You can see in the picture below how they look like paint droplets. They are shiny, so my lighting really picked up, but in natural light they really give the effect of paint splatter (in a much more controllable medium). They applied easily with just a dot of Tombow's clear glue

The clock die cut is from Tim Holtz. I made the little spikes by using some beading wire and Spring Bling Prills from Artquest
