Lasting Memories GDT: A Hard Day at the Beach

Mixed media scrapbooking page layout in green and red on kraft background with strips of paper, washi tape stripes, stamping, Tim Holtz die cuts, flairs/brads, glossy accents, and mica flakes and journaling

Happy Mother's Day! I'm in today to share my layout for week 3 guest designing at Lasting Memories.

I have an admission to make: when I received May's challenge list last month to get an early start on these projects, I didn't even think about the fact that this challenge would land on Mother's Day. As it happens, I had created a layout of my dad, which is especially ironic since I don't scrap him very often.

So whattayado? Roll with it, because by the time you realize what's going down, you're way too exhausted from chasing a two-legged twister around the house to cut dozens of new paper strips for this week's challenge to use strips of paper (or washi tape) in a BIG way. I KNEW there was a reason I saved all those little strips from the top of my paper pads! Also the perfect jumping off point for the "Throwback" challenge at Colorful Creations.

I also entered this layout in the super-fun Tic-Tac-Toe challenge at Scrap Our Stash, using a journal card, the color yellow, and 3+ patterned papers.

{Before I forget: I released my Mother's Day layout earlier this week, which you can see here}

The photos of my dad are from his time at the Cam Ranh Air Base in Vietnam. He was 20 years old and such a hippie! Tie-dye, check. Ankh, check. Hippie shades, check. I found some Tim Holtz ephemera that worked great: an airplane, because dad was a pilot, and a map of the Pacific Ocean area.

Even better, I found that the tape on the back of the photos that he had used to label the photos with peeled off as easily as washi tape, so I have his handwriting on the layout, which was such an unexpected gift. {my dad passed away 2009, the day before his 59th birthday and he is missed every day}

My own journaling was about finding those little pieces of tape on the back of the photos. It's hard to imagine your parents as 20 year old kids. I remember when I was 25 thinking about everything my dad had done by the time he was that age. He was such an adventurer. Everyone loved his campfire stories. He joined the Air Force at 17 during the Vietnam war. He was a pilot. He jumped on trains. He hitchhiked around the country during the freewheeling seventies. He lived a lot during his too-short life.

Though I can never capture my dad's spirit, I tried to make this layout have some of my dad's vibrance with something fun and bright. My favorite detail was the addition of Ranger's Glossy Accents (a dimensional gloss medium) over some of the paint dots, which makes them look like the paint is still wet. I also used the medium on the airplane, which makes it look like a puffy sticker. I splattered the background with red acrylic paint and red and green shimmer mist, and stamped a few "hippie" flowers. I entered this layout in the Mixed Media Monthly challenge: Put a Stamp on It.

That's it for me today. Hope you are all celebrating with your mothers and your children, and for those of you who have lost parents, remember the joy and love and what you carry with you.

It's so simple, has lines for keeping your handwriting straight and fits in with the whole feel of the page. Why didn't I think of this?? Thanks for the great inspiration!
