Row Your Boat + Process

Mixed media layout on kraft background with vintage die cuts and paint splatters

Hi all! Today I'm sharing another project for the Cherish the Memory design team, featuring Romantic Vintage Die Cuts. I'll be sorry to use the last of them, they've been so enjoyable to work with! I also wanted to share a few photos of the process behind the layout, since I'm always curious about others' methods, and hopefully to get you inspired!

Step One: Apply layer of white gesso to your background. I'm using Bazzill Basics Dark Kraft as my canvas.

Step Two: Apply modeling paste using a stencil to add texture.

Step Three: I added some more gesso using a scrap piece of burlap for another layer of texture, then added a little color with mists and inks.

Step Four: Add your photo. I've used scraps of paper as a matting behind my photo.

Step Five: Add focal point embellishments. In this case I've chosen three die cuts (one with a bit of sisal twine) and formed a triangle to create a sense of balance.

Step Six: Add some smaller die cuts, and a few accessories. In this case I've used Ranger's Glossy Accents, which I applied to waxed paper and let dry, then applied ink to the backs to give them a touch of color.

Step Seven: Continue accessorizing with smaller die cuts and textural elements, like seed beads and mica flakes.

Step Eight: Lastly, I inked the edges and added some glass glitter, paint splatters, and micro beads.

I'm entering this layout in the "Something Old, Something New" challenge at Colorful Creations

The "old" are the scraps of paper used as matting, as well as the glimmer mists and other mixed media items, and the new are the beautiful die cuts, of course!

Thanks, as always, for stopping by!
